Book Title: The Big Hat
Author: Bobby Lynn Maslen
Illustrator: John R. Maslen
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Date published: 1999
ISBN: 0545026806

About the book:
"The Big Hat" is another decodable text that is part of Bobs Books - Set 1, Book 17. It focuses on short vowels. Books in these series are for beginning readers and advancing beginners.

It focuses on some sight words such as a, OK, the, and was. It also focuses a lot the use of three-letter words and consistent short vowel sounds and uses words such as at, cat, Tex, end, big, in, off, up, etc.
There isn't much of a story line. There are three characters used throughout the book - Max, Rex, and Tex.

 Book Review:
I can appreciate these books because of the goal they all have in mind - to help young children become better readers. However, this book has very simple illustrations with little color that might not be very appealing to children. The size of the letters and words is good but overall the storyline is lacking. I feel as though children would easily lose interest in these books and not necessarily feel motivated to want to continue reading them. Overall, I'd give this book a 3 out of 5.

  1. Good discussion of motivation here. If the quality is too low you could jeopardize student engagement.
