Book Title: Look Book
Author/ Illustrator: Tana Hoban
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Date published: 1997
ISBN: 9780688149710

About the book:

In Tana Hoban's Look Book she uses a unique format called die- cutting which encourages her audience to use their imagination to anticipate what they think the full picture will be. She takes several different photos and before presenting them in full, she shows just a small clip of each picture.  For example, she uses pictures such as a sunflower, a hippopotamus, pretzels, etc. and uses the die- cut format to show just a snip of the hippos head making you have to think about what the photo actually is. Then, when you flip the page, the whole picture is revealed up close and the following page is a bigger picture of that image in some type of scene.

 Book Review:
For me this book is a 4 out of 5. I really appreciate the format that Hoban uses in her book, it is different than the other wordless picture books that I've seen. Sharing just a small piece of a bigger picture is a great way for children to predict and guess what they think something is. It's interesting to turn the pages and see that sometimes things aren't always what we perceive them to be. You can use this book in and out of the classroom to go along with a variety of different activities. For example, you can have children create there own "look book" using paints, crayons, and other art materials of their choice and share it with the class. The class can then make predictions about their friends books. Kids will love finding out if their predictions were right or wrong! This book would also be great to use in a science class as practice for students to make observations and hypothesize.

  1. The way you describe this book makes it seem really interesting! I'm curious as to how the author really shows the small clips before showing the whole thing. Neat idea

  2. Nicole, The book seems so interesting! I have never read it before but it definitely seems like one that will definitely have the readers critically think about the pictures.

  4. It's definitely worth checking out! (: You'd be surprised as you go through the pages trying to predict what the bigger pictures are and find you second guessing yourself.
